true west was a very nice and quite place to camp. the stalls were nice and roomy for the horses and fresh bedding was put in them when you got there. there was a tack store there that sold buckets and ect. in case you forgot anything. the trails were good. we rode around and look at other campgrounds and i was very lucky i choose this one. i would go back a visit true west again.

St Croix State Forest - Tamerack Horse Camp

We love this place! We like a challenge and these trails offer that. The trails are at times narrow and steep with man made stair steps and narrow bridges for crossing creeks. There are several places to get to the Tamarack River and water your horse. We've yet to ride all of the trails but we hope to get back again. There was one thing though that should be considered: BUGS. We've come twice in early May and both times the black flies were already getting bothersome. The bugs keep me away later in the summer...also, the ticks were really bad. It was a ritual after riding to check your horse for ticks and then yourself. We had friends that said their horses got sick after being there because of the ticks. Not sure about the details. We would like to return in the Fall sometime. I can only imagine that the scenery would be spectacular!

This is our second time to camp here. We do a lot of day riding at this park because we live close. We camped here for a friend's first horse camping experience. The River is a beautiful place to ride. We often see deer and and have seen eagles many times. The mosquitoes can get pretty bad in late summer, but with the semi-drought that hasn't been a problem. This horse camp doesn't get much business because it is new, but hopefully word will spread. Use it or lose it. Make sure you have a trail tag because the rangers WILL check.

This is a beautiful place. We went before there were many leaves on the trees, and it is still very pretty. I submitted this entry and got the city wrong. It is near Pelican Rapids, not Fergus Falls.

We stay at Stoney 1 & 2 in Allegany State Park regularly. There are only 2 cabins on the trail and priority is given to equestrian use. We take our horses, set-up a portable corral with a fencer where the horses can graze, and we have the whole trail for ourselves (and guests). There are also 4 tie-stalls. It is an idyllic spot!
There are 2 riding trails adjacent to Stoney trail: both are very nice and of only moderate difficulty for the horses. I highly recommend exploring other trails in the park as well.

When will they be opening? We have ridden here several times, It is our favorite. We prefer it over Brown County, it is our favorite in the hole state. So many trails up high and down low, water fall and so serene. Please when will you be open.

This is a nice place to ride. The trails are easy and very scenic. One thing that we like about the trails is that you do not have to stay on the trails...if you see something interesting, it is allowed to ride off trail. I think we rode all of the trails, but we didn't see any water crossings as reviewed. (not sure where the other reviewer got 100 miles of trails, there aren't, we asked) Maybe some larger water puddles. The mosquitoes were present, but not unbearable during our visit, but the weather has been pretty dry. There are no high lines at the campsites, but we strung our own between trees and that worked OK. The management is very nice and eager to please. They brought us a fire ring and picnic table (no charge to us) The only bad thing I can say about the horse campground is that there are NO bathrooms nearby. For $38 a night, I would think they could supply at least a Porta-John. I get the impression that horse camping is something they offer because there are trails (they rent horses) not especially a group that they cater to. We would go back if there were bathrooms, but probably won't because of that. They said to day ride is $15 a horse.

We went to the May organized ride and it was a blast! The trail bosses was wonderful along with the staff. The trails are well marked and can easy ride on your own, but the trail bosses know how to make a heck of a ride. The campround was very clean along with the shower houses, their is 2 campgrounds and if you want shade ask for the old side. They have one new very large bath house and one old one on the shade side.
We can't wait to return in the fall to see the trails light up with color.

I have not written about Iron Mountain Horse Camp in some time .. read all my reviews below and you'll know what I will say .. ditto! Same great trails .. same great people .. same great facility .. always a pleasure to see old friends and meet new ones each year .. something has to be said about a facility where you see lots of the same people from year to year .. if it weren't such a great place I'm sure we'd all find new places to go .. my friend Leonard Barnett tells me he has found a new trail so we'll "experiment" asnd ride it this year .. there are trails for everybody at IM .. flat and level for the inexperienced riders .. trails for the more experienced .. and then there are the "Danny" trails .. if you ride IM once .. you'll be back! I get emails from time to time from people wanting to know about the trails .. the follow up emails from them are always positive.
