We have camped at Pleasant Hill many times and it is one of my favorite places to ride. Lots of places to tie your horse on provided tie lines, water has been installed near the tie lines, and a manure bin is provided to keep your site clean. Tie lines are not directly close to many camp sites, but you can usually see your horse from where you are camped. There is a nice pavilion and also newer permanent bathroom (not flushes). But it is clean and well lit at night. There ARE shower facilities in other parts of the campground if you are desperate for a shower. There is an office area that has a small store for camping necessities and some snack type foods. Beautiful lake. There is a fee to camp here ($20/night). You can reserve your site in advance at travel.mwcd.org. There are many shorter well marked trails for day rides. And if you are really adventurous you can ride the white trail, cross the road, and hook up to Malabar trails. A ride from pleasant hill to Mt. Jeez gives you a beautiful scenic overlook, especially in the fall. This is a 6-8 hour round trip ride, but I highly recommend it. You can even tie off at tie lines provided by Malabar Farm Inn and Restaurant and eat lunch on the deck of an upscale restaurant. And don't worry, they are used to stinky horse people stopping off for a bite to eat :). Our horses have always been barefoot and they tolerate Pleasant Hill trails just fine. Malabar trails are a bit more rocky.

There are several trail loops to choose from. The white trail is the least challenging but it is still challenging. The pink/yellow loops are quite hilly, rocky and a lot of hair pin turns on a very narrow trail. All the trails had very narrow areas and a lot of "knee knockers" (areas where your horse could run you into a tree). There are medium sized rocks throughout the trail so shoes are needed. My horse did struggle with the hills on the yellow/pink trail and he is in decent shape; ridden twice a week 2-3 hours but on flat land. The tread is mostly clay with a few boggy areas and several stream crossings... we were lucky our shoes stayed on! Going downhill on wet clay adds even more challenge. There were also many exposed tree stumps and downed trees on down hill slopes. The campground is primitive with flat sites and very clean; each site has a fire ring and picnic table with gravel pad. High lines are available at the east and west end of the campground and no horses are permitted in the camp area... so your horse will be away from you during your camping. The camp area is quite beautiful and is on the lake! Manure bins, 3 water hydrants and 2 port-o-pots provided. No maps were available at the camp...

Trails are well marked even when leaf covered. Interesting terrain up & down rolling hills. These were good trials trails for green horses to learn to pick up their feet over logs and tree roots. Also horses learn to how to handle their weight going up and down hills. Had some difficulty finding the connection to Malabar's trails. Saw the connection on our return so apparently the white trial extends further than I anticipated. Accurate maps would be nice. Beautiful, peaceful ride.

Primitive but very clean campgrounds. Convenient water hydrants at high lines.
