We've been coming here for years being only 1 1/2 - 2 hours from the twin cities. There are two choices for day trips. The day area in the state forest was updated in the last year or two and is clean and comfortable. Trails either start or go by this location. Some trails cross Hay Creek or bridges.
The Hay Creek Campgound and Saloon offers an area for day riding ($2.00 per horse) or overnight sites. The horse campground is very typical with sites lined up in rows mostly unshaded with no picket lines. Just a couple of sites (those not taken by seasonal campers) are shaded with overhead ties and could use a sprinkling of lime to reduce the manure smell. Each site has water and electric except for the open area for day riders. The bathroom and shower located in the horse campground are not wheelchair accessible. The saloon offers a large menu and a full bar. Camping during the week offers peace and quiet with few people on the trails. The weekends are more crowded and noisy. |
