In my 12 years of trail riding, Harney Peak is still my favorite. Yes, difficult but so pretty. I will never ride the Black Hills without spending one day riding Harney Peak

Iron Creek Horse Camp in Custer Park rode to Harney Peak. Lots of Rock, steep, one hairy rocky river crossing. It was fun. Suggest you have crooper and breast strap, even if you normally don't use them. Especially on a hot day.

Did a day ride to Harney Peak. I would recommend this for experienced horse and rider only. Lots of the trail very slipery rock with not a lot of room for error. It is a pretty significant climb, so a fit horse is also needed. Not much water on trail for horses to drink.

We trailered to Centennial trailhead and rode into Black Elk Wilderness. The trail is approximately 85% easy, but the last 1/4 mile is very rocky and challenging. We were a little disappointed in the proximity to Rushmore after we made it to the end of the loop to the monument. It brings you out across the highway from the visitor center. The view is excellent, but they are doing major construction in this area and don't know if this trail will be altered at the end nearest Rushmore. Overall it was a good ride. Black Elk is very stunning and you can hear the 1880 steam train from this area.
