What a place for springtime trail riding. Wildflowers galore. Some rocks but nothing compared to what we're used to up in the High Sierra. Used Easyboots the whole way & they worked real well. The main Coast to Crest Trail was spectacular; from Campo Seco to the Mokulumne River overlook was fantastic (no water for horses though so be sure to bring your collapsable bucket to fetch equine's water). The wooden bridge mentioned in another's review was a tad spooky for my horse as hooves are loud on the wood planks & the bridge sits up high & very visible (& loud rushihg) creek below. A good challenge though quite safe if done with caution & care. No complaints on signage; easy to figure out where you were & where you wanted to go; rangers station provides excellent maps. Campgrounds were nicely maintained. For the price we expected hot showers for the humans on-site, but none available. (hint: go before Memorial Day & its 1/2 price!) Great place overall; we're going to make this an annual 3 day campout. Ranger we met on the trail was very informative & friendly. What an achievement to have finished this beautiful trail! Congrats on all who made it so!

We took the long trail heading east and found it to be enjoyable but the ground was pretty rocky in some areas and some trail riders might find it challenging. Lots of deer and turkey seen throughout the 12+ mile ride. Part of the trail is single file and very narrow but the scenery was nice and there were no bike riders or other hazards. There is plenty of shade which is nice during warm weather. Trails are well marked. Be prepared to open and close several gates along the way and two important things to know: 1) there is a wood bridge that you have to cross; and 2) there is a vehicle bridge that you have to pass under. The cars whizzing above may scare some horses and there is NO room for error at either bridge location. We dismounted and walked our horses along these two sections but a well seasoned trail horse would probably be fine. The camp sites are very nice with pipe corrals situated under shade trees; BBQ's, very clean port-a-potties, wash rack, and a large meeting area which is convenient for large groups or organized rides.

Husband took a 90 days trained 4 year old gelding and the west (short trail) was appropriate to condition a youngster. It's short with just a few rolling hills to make it mentally challenging for a new trail horse. We did run into a few Deer and Turkey.

The Mokelumne Coast to Crest Trail (MCCT) going west from the campground would be considered “Easy” and the MCCT going east from the campground would be considered “Easy to More Difficult”. EBMUD has built a 15.2-mile stretch of the Mokelumne Coast to Crest Trail (MCCT) along the south shore of Camanche Reservoir, in the foothills near the Gold Country town of Jackson. The trail is divided into two uneven sections at the Camanche South Shore Staging Area, where you must start and end your hike, giving you a choice between the 10.6-mile (round trip) East MCCT section, and the 4.6-mile (round trip) West MCCT section. The West MCCT is mostly single-track, and the East MCCT mostly fire road. Both sections offer views of Camanche Reservoir, spring wildflowers, and a tour of the oak woodland, chaparral, and grassland typical of the low foothill country.
