We have been staying @ Battlepark for 15 years now. We love it and although we are not too nuts about the horse stalls out in the sun, since the FS rebuilding, we will always love this campground. There are more trails and amazing cross country riding here than any other place we've found in the Bighorns and we've ridden on trails from Hunter, Elgin & Battlepark to Bucking Mule & Twin Buttes. The scenery is awesome. Some of the trails are for more experienced riders, but well worth the 15 mi. of rough gravel rd. to get there.

This horse camp offers some of the best day riding to upper mountain lakes and majestic scenes of nature anywhere. The trails are rocky and your horses need to be in shape and well shod. The road to the camp is rough and slow going for several miles and is 26 miles of gravel. Battle Park offers many different trails and destinations and you will find no better scenery unless you are willing to pack in to wilderness areas. The elk, deer and moose can quite often be seen from the camp. We long for the good old days when we could stake our horses out to graze, but weedfree hay and grain is required in this camp. The camp hosts are usually very friendly and helpful for advice and trail pointers.

We have camped at Battle park around 5 times. The last time after their so called improvements was not good. When the back country horsemen took care of the campground it was great. But now that the forest service takes care of it, we will not go back. The first come first serve rule is not good. We don't drive over 600 miles to be turned away, and since you can't make reservations, we just have to take our chance. When we stayed there last, the piles of horse manure were terrible. They were piled high and hadn't been cleaned up all summer. That made the flies terrible, in which we never had that problem before. The stalls needed more rock or whatever in them. When it would rain the horses were standing around in water because the stalls were not level by any means. It just amazed us that the campground was supposed to be so much better from the improvements and not having the back country horsemen taking care of it. But that wasn't the case, it was worse having the forest service take care of it. The riding was great as always, but the camping made the trip our last there. In which is sad because we really like riding there.

We've camped and ridden the trails at Battle Park quite a few times. We really love the trails and the scenery is awesome! We're NOT looking forward to the "improvements" they're planning to do this summer, as it's going to make camping there much more difficult. First come/first serve. You take the long bumpy road with a big horse trailer to get down there to find out it's full??

We spent two weeks at Battlepark this past July. Although the trails are very rocky, the secenry is spectacular. The ride to Solitude Lake was heaven on earth. Mule deer and elk were common visitors to the campground. There is such a diverity of riding, canyons, meadows, and scenic snowcapped mountains. Our son even climded Bomber Mtn and saw the plane wreckage. I would love to be able to ride Florence pass in its entirety.

Battle Park was a great Out-West experience. Awesome rides. If you are lucky enough to hook up with the Shoshone Back-Country Horsemen to show you around, you will have an awesome experience. The trails are o.k. but getting off the trail will have you finding some wonderful things, such as an old gold mind, a Lost Cabin, a secrect waterfall. Have a horse well-shod and in good shape. My well experienced horse even came up lame, but we rode every day for 7 - 9 hours. Take your lunch if you want to see anything. I heard the campgrounds are going to get corrals and they will be limiting the amount of campers in the future (first come-first serve) so may want to check with Forestry Service before going.

We stayed at Battle Park in July of 03. The experience was awesome. The camping facilities were very good. The riding is not for the beginner rider. You will need a horse that is well broke and shod. When going out riding it is best to have a GPS or go with someone that knows the area. Very easy to get lost. Other campers where very nice. Cant's say enough good things about the Big Horns. Can't wait to go back.
