Ft. Custer is very nice. There are some hills, not terribly steep and some parts are pretty rocky. Trails are well groomed (although I wish they would leave some of the smaller fallen trees to jump/step over). Several water crossings and lots of old stone building foundations along the routes. Parking lot was made bigger in the last year or two and they've added a manure pit to the parking lot area.

Trails are easy to moderate level, mowed and varied from open to wooded, water crossings and bridges if you want. Huge staging area will accommodate any size rig. Camping only during spring and fall scheduled events (check FCHFA website). Fun place to ride for a couple hours or all day.

If you have not been here in several years you owe it to yourself to give it another try. My husband and I found the trails to be in great shape with varied terrain. Nothing was too steep or eroded. True you share some trails with other users but everyone we met was friendly and careful around the horse. I would not rate this park as challenging more in the easy to moderate range. There is a trail several miles long that you can use your cart on if you enjoy driving. No campground for equestrians except when equestrian group has group permit.

First off there is no horse camping here just people camping. The changed the horse staging area to make it seperate from the bikes. the trails have been divided too, with most being horse only and some being multi use. There is now a trail that meanaders through the woods next to the kzoo river. And there is a trail that provides for a good canter (it is next to a field). The trails are nice here, but not well marked. I suppose that is because of the recent split. This is an under-utalized horse park that could have camping if they choose to add it. It is worth going here for a ride, lots of water crossings and nice trails. Hopefully in the future they mark it better, and provide at least a couple of horse camps.

The trails have now been separated effective 11/14/2011. Equestrians have approx. 15 miles of trails. There is no longer the trail with four feet deep water. There is now a separate parking lot for equestrians. New trail signage is not yet in place.

They need a horseman campground here. I was told that all the trails are changing here, and that they are seperating the bike trails from the horse trails. Dont know what is true. The trails as they stand now are just fun! Not for the flat trail type person. There are some hills, and some winding parts. There is a bridge, some water to go into, and an old asphalt road that had a beaver dam near it with 4 foot water. You dont need shoes here, but make sure your horse has seen bikes before, and be prepared for a bit of hostility from some of the bikers. Not sure on why they hate horseback riders so much, but some of them are really down right rude. really hope they put a horseman campground in here, it would be a nice place to camp. Would go back to.

I ride this park often. THERE IS NO EQUESTRIAN CAMPGROUND. In the near future there will be a day staging area for equestrians. Currently we share a small trail head parking lot with all other users. There is a nice variety of trails.

This was my first time at Fort Custer. Wasn't sure where to park. Had to ask a biker. No water at the park so bring your own. No horse camping. I went with three friends. We have been looking for a challenging place to ride and Fort Custer fit the bill!! I highly recommend this park! We went on the red trail (difficult) and it proved to be an excellent choice as the trail was full of hills, curves, obstacles and (be careful) low branches. There were also a couple straightaways to canter on but be careful. Our horses were tired at the end of the day from all the hill climbing. There was an area where the stream went under a bridge. We had the option to go through the water or over the bridge. The bridge did buckle a bit but was low to the water so not really an issue. Bikers were very friendly and helpful. Super nice people there! Everyone admired our horses and asked lots of questions. Only one gal said loud enough for us to hear, "Those horses are ruining these trails"! I'm sure she could benefit from seeing a therapist! All in all a super fun day and will be going back next weekend. I found my new favorite place to trail ride!!

It was a beautiful day, and the park was exceptionally beautiful! The trails were challenging at times, with a surprise and variety at every bend. Make sure you take a map on the trails with you, as the markings aren't real obvious many places. The bikers are curteous, and share the trails nicely. Hikers share the trails also, so make sure they know you're coming around the corners to avoid undue startling. It was fun to go through the chest high (of horse) water, with the lovely lily pads. I would definetely go back to this park! I especially liked being around the lakes, streams, and enjoying the scenery with other nature lovers; fellow horse lovers, campers, fisherman, bikers, hikers, families, and friendly park rangers.

Trails were beautiful and plenty and in wonderful condition. Went from easy to difficult. No horse stage area or water. Ride with trail runners and bikes but, everyone did well together. Will enjoy going back again...
