The nice thing about Hansen Dam is the easy access to more difficult mountain trails just east of the site. To access it, take the "Little Tujunga Wash" which goes under the 210 Fwy and Foothill Blvd. (ask anybody in the area). Then continue parallel to Osborne street due east... go past Middle Ranch and head on out. Easy to get around, and there is always someone around who can steer you back to where you started. Simply go forward, then turn around and come back. There is a trail that crosses Osborne called "The Loop" that heads to the neighborhood watering hole...The Hideaway on Kagel Canyon. You can tie up your horse on a Sunday afternoon, sit out on the patio and have a beer. Ask anyone how to go back... it's very simple from there and you will have make a "loop" back to where you started. There is a Poker Ride two times a year in the Dam area (April and Sept.) Email me if you are interested.

I live in Agua Dulce (high desert) and during the summer it gets real hot at my house-so we load up our horses and make the 40 min trip to hansen damn-is the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles. There is no place to "over night" but this is a great place to "day trip" and week days seem to be the best. If you park you rigs in "Orcus Park" which is off Foothill Blvd in Lakeview Terr., you have total access to all the trails and lot of room. There is a big equest facility right on your right as you pull into the park-DONT PARK THERE! The people who lease it from the Army Cor. of Engeniers will have your rig towed away-park in the LA City park, over by the big sand arena! The trails at this park range from easy to difficult. There are streams year round, and the lake. IF YOU GO OUT BY THE LAKE US CUATION! THERE IS QUICK SAND AND HORSES AND RIDERS HAVE FALLEN INTO IT! Horse trails are well marked and wide. You will see lots of horse people out riding-there are no motorized veh of anytype permitted so it is just you and the horses. Since I retired from T he Los Angeles Police Depertment-this is one of the few places I would advise anyone to bring there horses in Los Angeles for a day ride. Some of the dry river beds can have lots of rocks, and if you venture into an area where there is cement and water standing-use cuation as moss grows on the cement during the summer and may cause your horse to slip (certainly with steel shoes!). This place is a good place to ride if you are looking for something different from your normal day to day trails.
