Nice place to go for a day ride as I live only 20 min away. Very sandy no shoes needed, not nearly as pretty as some other places I've been too. They have finally put out some markers so it's a little easier not to get lost! It's usually too hot in mid summer. They do have some covered stalls that look pretty good. Never spent the nite so can't say anything about the camping. Overall a pretty good place to ride especially for beginners as the trails are easy. Would not be worth a long drive though.

The trails were wide and sandy. No holes. This is a place where you can let your horse run. Not a lot of woods so it is too hot in the summer. The beach is beautiful but you can't go down to it because of the boggy areas. Too dangerous. The campgrounds were clean but only 4 bathrooms for the entire campsite. The stalls were a long way from you depending on which site you had. I like the gated area in and out. There were some very strange narrow gates to get into the trails that were dangerous for horses since there was a bar across the bottom. Nice set up but needs some changes to make it worth the drive from Houston/Conroe area.

McCown is a favorite place to camp and ride among my riding friends. The trails are easy to follow, deep sand (no shoes needed) and there is plenty of room to ride to your heart's content. BUT - STAY OFF THE BEACHES especially when the water levels are low. Horses can get bogged down in the sand, Don't be afraid to ride there, but stay on the trails near the lake unless you are riding with someone who knows the few "safer" places. The equestrian camping loop has private, wooded camp sites, with tie posts, fire pit and picnic table. There is a really nice shower/bath house. New pens with some shade have recently been built. The other equestrian camp site is great when camping with a group. There is a 10 stall covered "barn" with plenty of room to set up hot-wire pens, communal fire pits and picnic tables. The facilities are porta-potties and there is little shade. This is a wonderful place to camp and ride - so long as you are smart.

I really like this one in the summer because you can take your horse in to lake without worrying about dropoffs in the lake. The trails are sandy and flat. Good for inexperienced riders.

Campground day use area is great with nice new barn with many pens. Nice and quiet with some nice trails. Can get lost easily with no trail markings. Trails very flat and sandy, great for working out your horse. Nice folks and cheap riding. We go all the time. Avoid in summer time for sure, as with most trails in terrible Texas heat. Oh and lots of deer if you get there early. Nice place to get away from the rat race.

2 stars on the trail beacuse they are not marked and basically flat. Good for a spring ride when you and your horses are getting in shape. I loved the campgrounds beacuse they were clean and lots of shade in one camp -other camp no shade. The showers and toilets are not close, but they do have a porta potty. We probably would not go back because of the traffic from Denton on I35. Happy Trails
