Cave Run Stables is CLOSED!!!! Went to White Sulfur and it was almost full, Rudys Ranch is all but closed very few campers anymore,looks like the forest service has run just about everyone away from Salt Lick

This place is a joke! Had to go accross other peoples property to get there and scary people hangin around. Carry a sidarm!

Don't waste your time or gas, the place is closed. Rudy's Ranch is still up and running, but there are lots of other places better. So long Salt Lick!!!!

Thank you Cave Run Resort and Stables. I thank you for the best time I have had in years. I had a great ride and trainer also friendly people. I had not rode a horse since I was 12 and when I took the trail ride I felt 12 again, thanks for the great time riding. The grounds was so nice and clean.I enjoyed meeting the owner and the campers, everone was so nice.I recomend comming here even if you dont ride. Thanks again and hope to be ridding and camping again soon,

What was formerly known as Cave Run Resort and Stables, Inc. owner Jonas Adams has closed. From my findings, the road is a passway to and fron a farm for ag. use only and other issuses including water line that was not installed correctly. The new owner was apparently taken for a ride and it wasn't horseback. I've been there lots and had a bad feeling about the set up.

This was our second time at Cave Run Stables campground in the past 12 months. It was bought bought by a trail rider named Kay who has ridden all over this United States and her pint-sized chihuahua who wants to grow up to be a great dane. The campground is very nice and the barn is amazingly big and clean. The stalls are huge and probably big enough for your horse to invite in two or three of his friends to party with all night. . .they're that big. Realizing it may be a big deal for some and not for others, the barn and showers/facilities are not right next to the camp sites. It might take a couple of minutes for a human to hoof it to the barn and facilities but hey, the exercise would probably do most of us some good. Cave Run Stables does sit off the road a little ways and you have to open and close two gates to get there but it's no big deal. Think of it as a story to repeat untold times to your 500 closest friends at the office. The trails at Cave Run Lake are impressive. On some of the trails you can ride your horses down to the lake and aggravate those guys fishing in a boat trying to land the big one. The only possible downside for you curmudgeon trail riders is that it takes maybe about a half hour to get to the trails from Cave Run Stables. But the trail to the trails is pretty, pleasant and, in and of itself, a nice trail to ride. Based on the two times we were there Cave Run Stables is an undiscovered campground and the trails around Cave Run Lake are waiting for you enjoy them.

We have stayed at Cave Run Resort numerous time, and really enjoy the camping there. It is a vast improvement over White Sulfur, like other reviewers have commented, White Sulfur campground has gone downhill and the prices up. Cave Run Resort has lots of trees, lots of electric hookups, plenty of primitive sites, all are well maintained. My only complaint is the bathroom(s). Until our last trip there, there was only one with a commode, now there are 4-5, if they continue to make them accessible. And they are dirty, very very dirty, make sure to bring flip flops for shower and wipes for commode, or seat covers. Also, there is no store/shop, you will not be able to buy food here, so be sure to bring with you. The barn is very nice & well maintained. The trails at Cave Run/Daniel Boone are the best, well marked and plenty of ways to mix it up so you can ride a different trail for a week. You can ride next to the lake on many trails, and the view of the lake from the hilltop is amazing. You won't be disappointed as long as you plan for what the Resort has available.

Jonas has done an excellent job with place Randy also makes sure everyone is taken care of.. The camp ground is well maintained and the shower houses are cleaned. The trails are wonderful to ride clean...

I don't ride horses, but I am a camping enthusiast. This place was GREAT!!! Tranquil would best describe my experience. Nice place, however the store/restaurant and the shower houses are still not in operation. Can't really say much to that because of the economy I am sure it would be difficult to accomplish what needs to be done. Owners are visionaries though!!! I totally recommend the campgrounds.

My husband and I were there after Labor Day weekend. It was so quite and peaceful. We really enjoyed ourselves. Jonas, Randy, and his helper were all very nice and polite. The store/dining area and bathhouses have not been finished yet but he does furnish a bathhouse out of one of the rental apartments. He also has ice that he sells at the store. There was cell phone service off and on at the camp but you did not get a signal very often but Jonas does furnish a phone in the barn that anybody could use for free and after you get on some of the higher spots on the trails you can get service. We would like better places to Pic line the horses. Some to the trees that you have to tie to are so close to the little creek and it has a pretty steep bank. The sites are also close and trailers are packed in there pretty tight therefore it is hard to get a good place to tie the horses unless you put them in the barn, which I think cost extra. I also think they need better water spickets, some sites have to share water with other sites, which takes pressure away from your trailer. Also you have to have a 50 to 100 feet water hose to hook on to the spicket at some sites. There is only one trail out of camp that we found to White Sulphur. You can get on trails at White Sulphur but it is about a 25 to 30 minute ride one way to get to White Sulphur so that is about an hour off your ride just getting to the trails. The trails at Cave Run are lengthy so with walking horses you are looking for about four to seven hour rides. Overall review of the camp-- I thought it was pretty good. We will definitely go back and hopefully after Jonas gets everything fixed up (store/dining, bathhouses, and apartments)it will be a really great horse camp.

Concerning White Sulphur Horse Camp. We were there this weekend and received a ticket for non-payment. $55 later. When we are staying for the whole weekend, we have always waited for the little white truck to come around to make payment. Well this weekend the lovely forestry department decided to come and talk to us the night before. Then wait till the next morning to see if we had paid or not. Well no, we were waiting for those people. Heck we were staying all weekend. We weren't going anywhere. Their rates went up to $12 a night for primitive but none of the grounds has made any improvements. All you get for primitive is a glorified portalete. No shade, no good place to tie your horse, boards down with nails sticking out. Plus on Sunday night a State Trooper came around and told our neighbors they had to turn off their generator in 1/2 an hour. That has never happened before. Our group won't be back. Never had much trouble before, except the place is going down hill. But live and learn. We will be going to Cave Run Stables & Resorts. Great place to camp. Very helpful. Everytime we go, there is some improvements being made.

Great place! really clean, quite, and friendly people. Trails were clear. Trails are marked but plan on an all day ride unless you want to backtrack back to camp. Plenty of shade at the camp sites, bathroom, barn, and grounds were clean. The best part was that we could let our dogs run!! Everyone had a great time and we all got along. As for the alcohol, i think its like most good camps, nothing is said if you are responsible and considerate of the other campers. All in all one of the best we've been to all year Great accomodation and scenery. Thanks Jonas and Randy.

Will not go back!!!!!!!! Owner told us no drinking. I think it depends on who he talks to on the phone. Trails are not great (very few) There was very much a party crowd when we were there. Had questions but got NO answers.

In response to the review from Sarah concerning the 10/01/06 ride, (asking humbly and with a smile) are you sure you have the right place and date? We were at Cave Run Stables on Sunday, October 1, 2006 (the only reason I remember it so well is that it was a treat from my husband and kids for my birthday!!) and we met some friends there. We went on the trails (by foot) and cooked hot dogs, just stayed all day and had a blast. We met with some friends there and we were all there all day. We saw the owner and his son. So I just wanted to ask if maybe it was a different day or time? I sure hope you will come back and see the place and meet with Jonas and Randy. They have worked so hard and accompished so much since 2006, and I sure hope that you will give them another chance. Hope to meet you there some day, we'll go for a walk if you'd like. Thanks.

BEAUTIFUL PLACE!! Jonas, the owner and his son, Randy were very friendly. Showed us around the building which will be the store/restaurant and the rooms are almost done. We are not riders, but the children loved going to the barn (clean!) and seeing the horses. The place is really coming along since we were there last fall. They had camping sites then, and it was peaceful, all the campers were friendly and sort of a quiet crowd. I don't really understand the last review, but hope they would give it at least one more chance, as we never experienced anything like it at all. The owner was clear to us that there would be no alcohol and when we camped there last fall with some friends, we saw no evidence of alcohol at all. Hope you'll go back and try again. The trails are great, even without a horse, our kids loved it and so did we!

Our family camped at Cave Run Stables and though we didn't ride, we enjoyed the trails for walking. The facilites are so clean, well cared for, and the place is just beautiful. Jonas, the owner and his son Randy were so friendly. We were looking for a place such as this where no alcohol is allowed. When Jonas told us that, and that it's a place he wants his grandchildren to be safe and enjoy, we knew it would be a place where our family could truly relax. It was quiet by 9pm and very restful. Jonas said that the cabin rooms will be ready by April 08, and the bath house before that. The store and restaurant will be open by May as well. We will definitely come back to Cave Run Resort and Stables.

Its the best horse camp at cave run lake bar none!!! Trails and facilities for both horses and people are great. The folks that run the place are very good people. Everything is clean and well taken care of and there are plenty of shade trees unlike rudys and white sulfer. Great place to take the kids or the whole family even if some of them dont ride its a very peaceful and relaxing place to just kick back and take it easy. You can drink there but no one gets loud and crazy just good people having a good time.

HAVE USED JONAS'S PLACE FOR DAY RIDING. CAMP AREA IS VERY NICE. MANY CAMPERS AND RIDERS THERE OVER THE LABOR DAY WEEKEND. TRAIL FROM CAMP TO THE CAVE RUN TRAIL SYSTEM IS GOOD, ONLY 20-25 MINUTES. HE HAS A GOOD THING GOING.

I just got back from spending 3 days at the Cave Run Stables and Resort. What a wonderful place. Jonas is still working on the resort, but I still loved it. The camping was great, had electric and water and I loved the big stalls. As soon as we drove up to the resort i fell in love with the place. It was so quiet and I met some really nice people there. The trail to the Cave Run trail system was excellent. I plan to go back soon. Wish Jonas the best of luck and hope he will soon have everything he wants to do with the resort done.

NEW, NICE PLACE.BATHOUSE AND COUNTRY STORE NOT COMPLETE. WILL BE SOON. THE BARN IS VERY NICE, CAMPSITES WITH WATER AND ELECTRIC.TRAILS LEAD TO WHITE SULPHUR HORSE CAMP WHICH TIE IN A LOT OF TRAILS AROUND THE CAVE RUN LAKE AREA. RIDING TIME VARIES FROM 5 TO 8 HOURS OR MORE. MOSTLY NARROW,UP AND DOWN, MODERATELY RUGGED TRAILS, NOT MARKED VERY WELL BY THE FOREST DEPT.
