My most favorite equine adventure is to ride from KissingRock Campground to Looney Cabin, stay a few days (usually an extra day or two than planned), then ride back to KissingRock. We pack up everything we want at Looney Cabin, our horses, and sometimes a dog and head for KissingRock Campground. Annie, the hostess, takes our stuff for Looney Cabin over in her pickup truck while we tack up and get ready for the trail. The 5 hour ride is along the Virginia Highlands Horse Trail. The trail is wide and clear, flat in most places, and easily navigated. There are rest stops and watering holes along the way. We take our time, stop for lunch, and enjoy this beautiful ride. When we get to Looney Cabin, we tie out the horses and then unpack for our stay in the cabin. This cabin is small & cozy, but will sleep 5 easily. There is a small refrigerator, heater, fan, lights, coffee pot, cooking utensils, Coleman stove. We cook at least one meal per day on the campfire. Then when we decide we must return to civilization, we pack up and ride our horses back to KissingRock Campground. Annie brings all our stuff back in the pickup. So everything is ready for us when we return to sadly load up and go home. One year for Mother's Day, my daughter gave me a "horseback trip." She doesn't really like to ride or go camping, but she knew that I loved it. So we did the KRC to LC to KRC adventure. She loved it! The ride was easy and fun. We made memories that will last a lifetime. We even called home to say we were staying an extra day! Yes, you can get your cell phone to work in spots out there. Where else can you have the luxury of staying in a cabin with all the things you want to take, yet camp in the mountains with no transportation? If you are pushed for time, there are some shortcuts, but I prefer the long ride in both directions. This trip is unique, yet very affordable. A must for horseback riders of all ages and experience. Plus, if you have friends or family who absolutely won't ride, they can drive to Looney Cabin and join you.

We spend most of our holidays at Kissingrock Campground. The camping is private and primitive, nestled in the mountains bordering the national forest. Often deer are seen grazing next to the horses in the pastures. Just minutes away from the Virginia Highlands Horse Trail, trail riding is available to all levels of the rider's expertise. The foliage offers different scenery depending upon the season. The horses have their own paddocks, so you don't have to tie them up. Well water is plentiful for watering horses, rinsing them off after a hot summer's ride and even taking your own personal bath. We cook over the campfire and wind down with conversation, gittar pickin' and playing cards. Kissingrock campground is easily located, only a few miles from Highway 16. The hostess makes certain the horses are safe and comfortable and that everyone has a good time.
