Rich & Marie are great host and very helpful. They will bring gate panel for pens to your site. Electric and Water are both handy and they have a few manure pits with wheel barrows and forks. Lots of shade for horses and campers and a good high tie going all around the camp. Two cute buildings, one for girls and one for guys that has one shower and a couple of toilets in each. They have a trail map and trails have signs with white blaze for horses. Rode with Marie one day and rode with Dan & Sheila to Alderman Cemetery on another day. They have a shelter and bbq that would be great for get together. Was a nice place and they have a cute western building that could be a great gathering place in poor weather or gift shop. Was 655 miles for me and on my way to Hocking Hills. Glad I stayed there!

Just spent 3 days riding here and the trails were awesome! The hosts could not have been more helpful and friendly. The home cooked food at the Restaurant was delicious. The BBQ and band Sat night just added to a perfect weekend. Give this place a try. My favorite in Ohio. Maps are easy to follow even if you have no sense of direction. Can't wait to go back.

New owners are making campground improvements. Cafe open on weekends: food good. Trails have new picnic stops...tables and tie rails provided by pike county o.h.c....trail markers and map improved. Awesome fall colors. You and your horse will be challenged at times. Areas of widened trails and our lunch at the Anderson cementry was interesting. After riding 45 miles in three days, I noticed a trailer tire going flat ...the campground owners helped me change the tire, they got out a floor jack and compressor.. Thank you Marie and Rich.

Found this campground last year and have been back so many times. It is a 2 hr drive for us and worth every minute. We love the trails and the campground. You can be out all day or just a couple of hours. The trails have everything, hills, flat, creeks and they are well marked. Come back from a day of riding, relax and eat at the restaurant, it is so much easier and tastes good too. Rich and Marie just purchased this campground last year and are doing a great job of making this a great campground for you and your horse. We have been to several campgrounds/trails over the years and this one by far is our favorite.

The bathrooms have been remodel and they are great!! We love riding at Pike. Joyce fixes breakfast and dinner on the weekends - eggs, biscuits, hash browns, sausage gravy for $5 ... worth every penny not to have to cook and do dishes. She also does dinner, the menu varies, for $8 ... also well worth it.

Our first time to Tanglewood. We had elec and water was fairly close by to get for the horses. Wheel barrows provided (bring your own pitch fork) to clean up picket areas with two dump trailers close by. Nice picket lines provided at each site. Mens and womens restrooms. Not sure about the mens but the womens had two toliets and one shower. I enjoyed the hot shower with decent water pressure. The camp sites are really close to the road but that didn't bother us as there wasn't much traffic. The restarant had breakfast buffet open when we went. Had biscuts and gravy, scrambled eggs and home potatos for $4.00. We didn't feel like cooking the second day so it was nice to utilize that option. Had to ride down the road a bit to get to the trails. Trails were very hilly but I felt no danger in them. Horses must be shod and in decent shape to manuver through them. Lots of rocks. We are normally barefoot riders but were told to have shoes and I am glad we did. Most trails were decently marked though some were not. We did have a tour guide which was very helpfull. Overall I had a great experience there. I wouldn't go here if you want flat trails and are more of a beginer but I wouldn't say that these were dangerous trails either. We will be going back. Thanks Joyce for a great weekend.

My husband and I just spent our first weekend at Tanglewood. The trails were challenging, but nothing I would call dangerous. They weren't as steep as I expected, from what we'd been told, however there were some very long inclines and decents. But, this is what made it beautiful because that's what gives you the views. My husband and I both felt the map could have been a little but clearer. A couple of trails were not marked at their entrances and we kinda guessed where we thought we were from the map. It kinda made us nervous because we were out late in the day and did not want to get lost. But we guessed correctly and got back to camp ok. The campground was nice. We liked having a restaurant on the premises. Used it quite a few times. Good food. Nice people. Joyce the owner, went out of her way to help us out of a jam we found ourselves in when we put our horses in the trailer and found one had thrown a shoe. We took the shoe but had no nails. Joyce talked to everyone about our problem and found someone that talked to someone else and found us nails. Then she offered the services of one staff member to tack it back on. That put us on the trail instead of sitting it out in camp. Joyce is a people person, anyone trying to run their own business could learn a thing or two from her!! ---Was this place sheer perfection, No, was it a great place to ride with good people that want to keep trails open to people that want to ride them--ABSOLUTELY!!! Thanks to all at Tanglewood that work hard to give us trailriders another place to enjoy our horses. We will return as soon as we can.

First visit to Tanglewood Acres Campground. Nice facility with electric and primitive sites. Hot showers and water readily available, but my horse would not drink it (others we were with did though). Sites are a little tight, made it slightly difficult to get out. Chris (new owner) is trying hard to make this a desirable destination. He is very nice and is running the entire place himself (restaurant, campground-reservations, manure wagons, bathroom duties (ladies use lots of TP and paper towels!), ice cream shop, etc.) Trails are easy to get to (minimal road riding) and are challenging but not dangerous. Yes, your horse needs to be in good shape! It rained almost the entire time we were there, so that made the trails exceptionally slick. All trails are very well marked and the map is accurate. Rode almost all of the trails. I would like to go back when the weather was nicer. But it is a good 4-4.5 hrs. from Washington, PA--so probably only a "once-a-year" trip for me. I disagree that it is any harder than Hocking Hills-about the same, in my opinion.

A friend of mine who rode Pike Lake several years ago always told me horror stories about the hills and rocks at this park; he said he would never come back. However, my boyfriend and I loaded up the horses and hauled them out for a day ride and had a wonderful time. We parked at the campground (was $3 for the day) and rode on the trails across the street from the campground. Looks like a nice place to camp; little restaurant and ice cream, and overall the place looked well-maintained. I would consider coming back to camp there for a weekend. As far as the trails, there are a lot of hills; I could see where the old trails used to be, but the OHC has been busy and built in switchbacks for the larger hills. The trail along Robinette Ridge was beautiful. Not really a good place to bring an out-of-shape horse. We've had a very rainy summer so the trails were muddy in spots, but not sloppy or deep. Since we were only there for the day, we didn't get to explore the trails on the other side of the road - makes for a good excuse to visit again.

I am a member of the Pike County chapter of the Ohio Horse Councel. We do the trail maintenance here in Pike State Forest. Last year the Ohio Division of Forestry upgraded all of the trails here eliminating most of those scarry steep trails by installing a lot of switch backs or actually moving the trail to a more suitable location. However it still is not a place for green or out of shape horses and riders. If you are an experianced rider there is much great riding here and you should come a give it a try. There are about 60 miles of trails. There is a small day parking area at the bottom of the hill on Pike Lake Road which can hold 4 or 5 rigs. Tanglewood is a nice campgroud offering electric and water on about 14 sites. There are many primitive sites as well. There are hot showers and a restarant too.

The scenery was great on the way into the campground. At camp the host was helpful and nice. The campground is nice and shady. Primitive sites have no water, but I think there was electric, and pit toilets. If you choose there are spots up front by the office with water, electric, and bathrooms with showers. We were there on a slow weekend, and were the only ones there. Host has the place for sale, and hopefully another person that likes horses buys the place. It would be a real shame to lose a great place like this. If I lived closer, I'd buy it in a minute!! The trails are kickin'. You need a good, in shape steed to ride here. Yes, there is road riding, but not enough to matter much. It was a good experience all the way around. Hope to go back in 2008!! There is enough riding for 3 to 4 days (not with a gated horse, HAHA)

I day rode part of the Pike Lake park yesterday. The trail are as listed, CHALLENGING. The main draw back is accessing the trail heads from Tanglewood Camp Ground. Either direction you go it is 1/2-3/4 mile ride on a paved rode to and from the trails. That may not be a problem on a weekd day but on a nice week end day, there is a lot of traffic. Most of the cars did slow down but we had 2 cars that absolutely flew past us. It is not a place for new inexperienced horses or younger inexperienced riders. The trails are in a pretty hardwoods forest. However, there is a lot of rock, flat rock, sharp rock, you name it, a lot of rock and several steep hills. Again not a place in my opinion for inexperienced horses and or young inexperienced riders.

Holy cow batman! These trails are NUTS! I have been riding for more years than I care to remember and I have NEVER seen trails like this. Now, it could be I've been riding in the wrong places, but these trails are scary. The trails closest to the campground are straight uphill with sharp switchbacks and the footing is either very rocky or extremely rutting. I am thankful that we did not attempt this ride when there had been any type of rain, as I can't imagine getting up/downhill with the trails in the shape they were in. We didn't even make it to the top of the hill before we turned around and slip/slid back down to the bottom. We spent the rest of the day joking about Ohio having mountains! The lady at camp was very nice though, and refunded our camp fee, just charging us the day rate since we were out on the trail about 40 minutes before we realized we were way over faced. The campgrounds themselves were nice and shady, and the water spigots were easily accessible. The creek was dry when we were there, but it looks like it would be a beautiful place. Tanglewood is an easy 15-20 minute drive from Paint Creek, and we spent the rest of our day riding there before heading home. I would only recommend this to very experienced riders with well trained horses who are in peak condition.

Trails are very well maintained and pretty well marked. Very pretty scenery. There are some steep hill climbs and some deep mud holes when we were there. Some road riding is required to reach the trails from the campground. Trails are rocky and challenging in places but my barefoot horse did fine. Tobacco Barn Hollow is very beautiful. Robinette Ridge is closed due to logging. The campground is very well maintained. Joyce, the owner is very friendly.

Trails are great but could be marked better in certain areas; do need to use a map. Need to have your horse in shape to manage some of the hills as they are long and steep. Very good workout. Campground is nice - electric, bathrooms, showers. Ice cream shop! Picket lines already set up for you. Owner was very pleasant.

WE RODE THERE IN NOV. AN THE TRAILS WERE GREAT. LONG CLIMBS AND DECENTS. THE TRAILS WERE ROCKY BUT SAFE AND FOOTING WAS GOOD. NO TROUBLE WITH MUD OR BUGS. YOU DO HAVE TO DO SOME RODE RIDING BUT NOT MUCH. THE CAMP WAS ALRIGHT BUT COULD HVE IMPROVEMENTS ON THE HOT SHOWER HOUSE AND THERE WERE SOME DUMPY OLD TRAILERS IN THE CAMP THAT TOOK AWAY FROM THE APPEARANCE. THERE IS ELEC. FOR AN EXTRA CHARGE AND THE DINER WAS OPEN IN THE EVE. ALTHOUGH I DIDN'T EAT THERE I HEARD IT WAS GOOD FOOD. I WILL GO BACK BECAUSE OF THE TRAILS. YOU HAVE TO RESERVE THE SPOTS TO CAMP WITH A CREDIT CARD.

If you want a real challenge???, this is a good place to get one. I've rode Hocking Hills, and thought that was challenging until I rode these trails. Hocking Hills is a cake walk after manuvering these trails. Lots of switchbacks and steep climbs. The Fire Tower trail isn't overly ridden, so it was in pretty good shape considering how wet this year has been. Also rode Tobacco Barn and Mitchell Ridge. These are ridden more, and there was some pretty muddy spots. Also quite a few trees down from the recent storms, but the trails where passable. The hollow of Tobacco Barn is a nice cool ride on a hot day and is rather flat while you cross back and forth across the stream. Good place to get those gaited horses moving. Once you get up the ridge, your back to walking, as there are just a few more rocks than I'm comfortable gaiting my horse thru. These trails will test your horse out and your ability as a rider. You want a good conditoned horse to take these on, and one that is very sure footed and experienced. Not the place for a green horse or rider. There are quite a few streams, and water wasn't an issue, but I'd check in a dry year before venturing for a long ride. Your horse is going to work up quite a thirst in those hills. There are some spots on the trail that are just a little confusing, even with a map, and you DEFFINETLY want to get a map. Tanglewood is a nice camp ground, and Joyce will do whatever she can to help you out. Got a farrier for me as my horse threw a shoe, and we where back out riding again. Only draw back is that you do have to carry water, but there is a creek thru the camp, so we let the horses drink before going back to the campsite which help eliminate needing to carry a lot of water.
