The park is slated by the state to close in July. If you want to ride here, you will have to do so before then. If you want to camp with your horses, you can do so by going to the south border of the park, and driving up the dirt road around to the back side. You will be completely alone here, and must bring all you will need. No corrals, trees, or even tall cactus. You must bring water for both man and beast, but a nice feed store is at K-8 and 170th east, so they may let you have water and have all kinds of feed and tack. Nice folks, and can perhaps let you park here to go the 3 miles to town for supplies. This is all high desert terrain, and if you want to ride for many miles, you can from almost any direction. Desert roads go all over, but respect property owners. Across 170th from the feed store is the trails to Piute Buttes, where you can see more hills and even an Indian Museum. Going west from the museum, you will see several buttes, and riding here is nice in spring/summer/winter, but summer can be really hot. Town has grocery, gas/diesel, milk, two restaurants, hardware, and even a library and small auto parts. Ice is available at the grocery and the dairy, and propane is available at the dairy.
Good luck, and this can be a real fun ride with no other interruptions. |
