Very expensive for amenities! No water, pens, or hitching posts at sites. $30/ night for electricity only. Only stalls are covered and $15/night. Water not close. No gravel anywhere. Had to park in grass and mud. Saw where people had gotten stuck and dug ruts. Personally it's a day ride place. Day ride parking is free.

The Park has added electric and water hook up in the horse area. Much imporved. Trails are well maintained and scenic. With the woods, water crossings and the lake.

Crows Creek Campground now has electrical and water sites as options in the equestrian loop as of the fall of 2011. Along with the beauty of the lake there are also fields of native grasses and flowers along the trail leading out of the campgrounds to Jack Rabbit Bend. This makes for a very plesant ride in mid to late summer when all is in bloom.

Campground has lots of shaded parking for your trailer but no electrical or water hookups. It's such a clean and pleasant camp ground that I'm surprised that they don't offer more amenities for the equine campers. They charge $14/day to use it, which seems a little high for the lack of improvements. It is well patrolled during the day and night. The trails are nicely groomed with natural/normal obstacles at different times of weather/year. We recommend hauling into one of the turn around areas (#22. 23, 24) and riding the trails to the east of each. You won't meet many people and the trails are more rustic but you won't have to mess around with the Jack Rabbit Trail (once you've done that one, you kind of get bored with it) which you must go through if you come from the camp ground or the Jack Rabbit parking lot. If you've already done that end of things before, trailer to the various turn arounds and you'll be able to get to the far east of the trails without being in the saddle for 6+ hours. Enjoy!

Good Day ride, trails are used quite a lot and very muddy, no water or electric toilets. trails are well marked, and you must stay on the marked trails. The camp grounds seem to merely tolerate horse people, not enough tie ups, no electric.Be sure and park at Jack Rabbit, or a dead end turn around, or you will be charged.

Trails are in pretty bad shape this time of year, add in the hunters and its a pretty miserable ride. Look forward to the new year!!

I ride the Smithville trails 10-20 times a year. The trails are well groomed thanks to the Northland Trail volunteers. I would consider 80% of the trails beginner-intermediate. I take my mother for her once a year ride on these trails. It is also good for kids. The biggest parking lot is at Jack Rabbit Bend and you can ride as long as you want. We usually ride the shoreline trail out which winds along the shore of Smithville Lake and then ride the Boundary trail back. The boundary trail is a straighter route back to the trailer with tired horses and kids. The shoreline trail is marked with orange markers and the boundary trail is marked with white markers. During heavy rains the shoreline trail will be muddy in areas. The more difficult trails are off of Quinn rd to the east. Just get the map online from the Northland Trails org and you can get around fine.

Entered Jack Rabit for day ride, very well maintained, lots of room to park, well marked trails, much improvement from early spring. Has unimproved toilet, no water. Using the map I made it to turn around 24 and could not make out the trail to #23. Met many pleasent riders along the way.

Trails are awsome, dissapointed in the campground, no electrical hookups in the equestrian area, would probably be full if this was offered and easily be a 5 star place. Also there where none equestrian party people camping in the horse camping area, not good. Also could use some more tie ups.

Volunteers from Northland Trails and Greenways have restored all of the original 26 miles of horse trails at Smithville Lake. Your site, along with many others, are still showing only 16 miles. The Corps of Engineers is now linking to the NTG Trail Map on their website along with their map. In addition, NTG volunteers, in cooperation with USACE, Clay County Parks, Clay County Highway Department, Clay County Commission, and Kearney Saddle Club have developed a new parking area at 170th and Collins Road. The Jack Rabbit Bend Equestrian Parking Area will hold about 25 trailers, and parking is free. Riders can also access the trail from one of six turnaround parking areas. Feel free to visit our website at www.northlandtrails.org for the latest map.
