We were scheduled to come with friends for the Memorial Day weekend. As we were pulling in, our friends were already pulling out. When we called to reserve, we explained our friends had an extremely long 6 horse trailer, but when they got there, there was absolutely no way they could fit in the spot they were given. Staff did attempt to move them to another site, but it was so muddy there were concerns of getting stuck. Not wanted to ruin our vacation, our friends encouraged us to look around and make our own decision. We were well aware it would be busy, but the amount of people there was frightening for the bathhouses they had available. I did not even walk in it. Trailers were less than 2 feet from one another and there was a tent in our spot. I would consider the stalls very unsafe at least in the lower campground where we were placed. To their credit when I called and told them we were not satisfied, I had no difficulty receiving my deposit back. We left and went to Circle E Guest Ranch which was absolutely lovely.

This past week, a goup of ladies and I decided to take a trip to Buffalo River Trail Ride. We tried to contact the office several times during the week via telephone, e-mail, and Facebook and were unsuccessful. We did receive a recording on the telephone instructing us that they would be out a few days and return 7/25/2014 because they just finished an organized trail ride. We tried calling the following days, and finally reached Tracey in the office. Bless her heart, she was overwhelemed and explained that they had some damaging rains that left them with a great deal of cleanup and repairs to the campsite. We decided to go anyway, and Tracey left us instructions on the office door for us when we arrived late Friday night. The next morning, she met us at the office with her bubbly personality and helped us checkin. The office/gift shop was very nice and we all bought a nice shirt. The campground itself looked a little ragged, as they hadn't been able to mow or cleanup much from the damaging rain. The sites had electric hook up, but no water for human consumption, and didn't have fire pits/grills like most others do. I would suggest bringing your own grill. We camped by the riverside, which offered a beautiful view. Many of the campers were taking advantage of the river and floating along. It was a little difficult trying to get down the banks, as the access points were only foot paths through tall weeds that other campers had made. The damaging rains also tookout some bathhouses that were down at the riverside, so we had to drive to the topside to use the bathhouses, which were fairly new and well maintained. However, on Saturday, it was out of water also, so we had to find another bathhouse (trailer) to wash off. Staff was prompt to arrive at 10pm and begin repairs. They were also gracious enough to bring a portable toilet near our barn for campers to use. The covered horsebarns that are provided are a little older down by the river, but greatly appreciated. The staff was actually making repairs on them while we were there. The office provides a map of the area, however it wasn't very helpful. We are so very happy to have made friends with a fellow camper who had been there many times, who provided us with a guided tour and personal comedy relief. As the trails were not clearly marked and at some placed overgrown, we heavily relied on the guide. Having someone who knows the area proved to be the best option, as he took us places we never would have found, like an old hunting shed off the river, two water falls, a cave, and several other points of interest. On Saturday night, as we were going to bed, the rain came down and the water camp up. Sunday morning, the Tracey and her husband came down to check on us personally, and offer us a free night on our next trip as we had gotten rained out. Their personal visit and apology made a lasting impression on our group. They even assisted us in pulling our trailers up the step inclines. Although they were experiencing personal hardships, they still tried very hard to meet our needs, and we were very appreciative. We look forward to visiting again, and seeing their improvements.

We arrived during the week and were able to get a campsite right on the river and it was beautiful. Stalls were clean and adequate. Did not have wheelbarrow or stall picks so bring your own. Bath house was clean and it was nice to have access to shavings and ice as needed. Trails were beautiful and really enjoyed riding the river. Lucky I was with people who knew their way around as I did not see many signs marking trails. I would be afraid to navigate on my own.

I have stayed at Buffalo River 2 times. Last yr on Labor Day weekend. I had a blast. I guess I excused alot bc of the flood. We didnt get out and really explore alot of the trails at this time. We did some short rides and swam the horses in the river alot.I like the set up of the upper campground. We went this past weekend and really got out on the trails. Some of the trails are really pretty but then some very frustrating to me. The lower campground still looks like it did last year with no improvements since the flood. Most of the campsites are in need of mowing and weedeating. Overall its a fun place but they really need to take the time to do some upkeep and most definately need to remark their trails. I dont like being lost on trails not knowing how long it is going to take to get my horse back to water.

In my opinion, rates are high for camping and riding. Trails are not marked well at all. Horses need to be in great shape, alot of up and down hills and easy to get lost. Camping fees per person, I have never heard of...and the stall barn or horse hut/shed...muddy,wet hay, manure and flys.....I had my horses in the horse barn, finally found 3 stalls together that were somewhat clean, no tools or wheelbarrows to even clean the stalls, I brought some pine shavings, good thing. I just got the impression they wanted your money, and if you had a good time, good for you. I won't be back, you can believe that.

We thought the campground and amenties were awesome, however trail riding was a disaster. The map is not very helpful at all, things need to be color coded, and more descriptive. . You would be going on a trail and it abruptly dead end. Very irritating and frustrating to turn 8 horses around on a hill. Other than that we were very pleased.

My family has been trail riding at Buffalo River for about 6 years. And we all love it. There are trails there for beginning or experienced riders. During the organized rides they have great trail bosses. We prefer to ride on our own,and have found that even after the logging was done, the trails are marked well and you can find your way with little trouble. We enjoy getting out and exploring trails. The campground is comparable to any we have been in, as well as stalls and all facilities. Our family has made some great horse back memories there and we hope to make many more!

I was at the organized ride in June, after looking at the flood pictures from historical May flood, I just want to say what a great job buffalo river people did to get it into shape, I had a great time, the food and workers as always terrific. The recovery from the flood was amazing, you have no idea unless you experience it. Thanks for a great vacation.

Buffalo river trail ride is no where near what it use to be! Trails are washed away with NO signs of being fixed, no markings to help you stay on the "use to be" trails. The map does no good at all! Price was WAY TOO HIGH! 21.95 just for a day ride!!! Stalls were full of mud & muck, bugs flies & gnats were so bad you couldn't stand to be out there with some form of bug control. Buffalo was my first ever camping trip on horseback when i first started riding and it's very sad to see it in the state it is in now.

just returned from buffalo it was my first and last trip there...it is not a well maintained campground or trail system. the riding was good but not one trail marker did we see the map is useless. the stables are wet and nasty with no wheel barrels or forks to muck so there are big muck piles everywhere and they dont care... I saw noone making an effort to keep the place clean for the 3 days we were there. The amount they charge in no way is worth this trip.

I began riding at Buffalo when I started dating my husband 18 yrs ago... It was the best place to ride. He had been going there since he was 14. About 5 yrs ago they started logging the place and it has gone down hill since then... We hadn't rode there in like 2 yrs until today. It will be the last time we ride there! They have logged both sides... the trails are no longer there, the flood in May didn't help any but the people that run Buffalo evidently could care less about cleaning up what few tiny trails they have left... The stalls are knee deep in mud and muck! For two people to ride for the day it was $44.00 and for what we got outta the ride, which was nothing but lost (and my husband used to could ride every trail there with his eyes closed!), it was soooo not worth it. It takes us a little over an hour to get there from where we live... Circle E takes about an hour and forty five minutes, a day ride for a couple there is $25.00... that is where we will go from now on when we want to ride somewhere close to home! Buffalo should just shut down until something is done about the trails and the logging has stopped!

We have been going to the Buffalo River Trailride in October, every year that we can get there since 1987. It takes us two full days of driving to get there, and yet every year we jump through hoops and bend over backwards to get to this ride. When we get lucky, the leaves are just right and the colors are amazing. The people that run this place are the absolute best, going out of their way to do whatever it takes to make your week enjoyable. The food is country cooking, not great for my diet.. but overeating is my fault; there is a great salad bar available for dinner! Free firewood may be the most important part of my best evening memories, sitting and meditating in front of a bonfire! Other nights we go down to the dancehall and get in a few line-dances in before checking the horses, all snug in their rugs (Florida horses!), admiring a clear sky that is full of stars, breathing the crisp air scented with horses and hay, and then retiring for the evening to the sounds of the band in the distance. The fact that everyone brings their beloved dogs but do a pretty good job of keeping them all on leash makes it great for us, as our dogs like camping there as much as we do! We are packing up now for the upcoming ride, and cannot wait for the moment we pull out of town. I never allow myself to believe we are on our way till we get past the Florida state line then it is all joyful anticipation from there! AND yes, when you get the certificate at the end of the week that states that you survived the trails at Buffalo River, you will know that you and your horse deserve it!

This place SEEMS to have it all: great campgrounds, dusty roads, rolling river, and canoeing. However, the trails are NOT marked properly due to the excessive clear cutting. We have been going to this place for four years and the clear cutting has encompassed all the old trails. Needless to say, the riding consists of backtracking and finding your way back to camp instead of focusing on relaxing and enjoying your horses. The maps are VERY misleading. Also, be prepared for someone to jump into your trailer before you can stop to check your coggins. They are very anal about making sure they get your money and paperwork lined up, but they neglect their own: proper maps!

We absolutely love Buffalo River Trail Ride. We went 2 years in a row and planned more until unforseen circumstances kept us away. We will be going back as soon as we can. The thing we liked best were the people. The owners and staff were all so caring and friendly. We also made many friends with the other trail riders there. We like the half day slow ride, because we like to come back to camp and just relax the second half of the day. The trails are great and the trail bosses even better. April is a great time to go because they are not as crowded then as later in the year. The campsites and bathhouses are clean and in good condition. The food is good too. Our mules loved playing in the water. Highly recommend this place!

The trails were great and the trail bosses very helpful. I went on the "half day slow" rides, but more advanced riders could pick longer, faster rides. The covered stalls were were well lighted and spacious. The bathrooms were very clean and the showers had very hot water at all times of the day. The food was average quality fare with the exception of the Friday afternoon pork chops, which were smoked and delicious. Take your own knives for steak night...the steaks were very good, but the plastic butterknife from the silverware pack was no match for them. The bottom line is that you could eat as much as you want at each meal and all four food groups were well represented. The owner of the trail ride fired up a mean griddle and kept a steady stream of flapjacks coming at breakfast. Very high quality hay and pine shavings were available for $6.00 a bale or bag. Very reasonable. Fun horse shows on Wednesday and Thursday had events from novice to advanced which were humorously broadcasted by the staff. The auction on Friday afternoon yielded lots of bargains. The trail ride gives away a nice saddle on Friday night at the dance. The band was pretty good and the staff included dance instructors that taught C&W dancing (free) before the band took the stage each night. The drawbacks were the very high grass in the campgrounds. No one could understand why it had not been mowed. The very heavy dew was a real menace in the morning and the high grass aggravated the situation. The "laundromat" was one washing machine and two dryers that really struggled to dry clothes. I understand that a lot of people want to get away from it all and will not like this suggestion, but it would be nice to get cell phone service in camp without driving two miles toward the highway. It would also be nice to have access to wireless internet somewhere in the camp. The 5 mile entrance road has some branches sticking out in the road that can damage your vehicle with noticeable scratches. They should be cut back. There was a lot more good than bad and the value was exceptional. You'll meet lots of great people and see lots of breeds of horses.

The trails are beautiful, and the river is clear and refreshing. The horses loved playing in the river too. Recommend shoes all the way around on your horse. Horses should be in good condition. The trails are both interesting and challenging. Plenty of creek crossings and shade. Sadly, a lot of logging is going on around the property which seems to be decreasing the number of once available trails. The food is okay, breakfast is best. Customer service is very good, friendly and helpful staff. Couple of cons: I wish the grass had been mowed at the camp sites; also the camp sites were very small. If you want to spread out and not be able to hear your neighbor snore, you may want to reserve two camp sites. Luckily, we were able to move to an area where we had plenty of room. Most of the barns are just fine. A couple of them had very small stalls, so you may want to inquire about the size of the stalls at your barn assignment. The band was good, and it was fun for one or two nights, but the problem was that you could not get away from the music because the band was so lound that it could be heard throughout the camp ground, at least on the lower level where were located. This intefered with our desire to watch DVDs and play our own music. The band plays from 9pm til midnight. Over all, the vacation was very nice and we had a great time.
