Talk about private! Shaded campsite great for hot summer days, horses were very happy in a nice little shaded corral, (no stalls). Annie led us to the trailhead, which was very easy to get to. Trails go on forever and if horses are in shape they can run as far and fast as they want. This is the least rocky area of the Highland trails we have ridden on; we rode about 6-10 miles with very soft footing great for any tender footed steeds. This is a very easy trail the most challenging would be the distance you can go! But you do have to backtrack.

We spend most of our holidays at Kissingrock Campground. The camping is private and primitive, nestled in the mountains bordering the national forest. Often deer are seen grazing next to the horses in the pastures. Just minutes away from the Virginia Highlands Horse Trail, trail riding is available to all levels of the rider's expertise. The foliage offers different scenery depending upon the season. The horses have their own paddocks, so you don't have to tie them up. Well water is plentiful for watering horses, rinsing them off after a hot summer's ride and even taking your own personal bath. We cook over the campfire and wind down with conversation, gittar pickin' and playing cards. Kissingrock campground is easily located, only a few miles from Highway 16. The hostess makes certain the horses are safe and comfortable and that everyone has a good time.

A down to earth place with hospitality a plenty. A campsite as remote as you want it to be. Days of peace and quiet or a trip to the Sugar Grove resturant if not in the mood for cooking is conveinent. Trails unlike no others, if trailblazing is your thing, go for it. If you prefer the gently rolling and sloping trails that meander endlessly they have plenty of those too. A place for the young ones on a first experience, or for someone like me who enjoys a three or four hour ride, or for the 7 or 8 hour adventurers. Placing the riding aside the one thing that draws me back to this little camp is the respect for the wilderness. We get so wrapped up in every day lives, we loose respect for the pureness nature has to offer. If not a fan of preserving nature, this is not a place for you. Pack it in, pack it out!
