We have camped with our horses for 3 years at Hopewell Lake and the surrounding area. The campground has pens, toilets and water. You can also camp in the Nat'l Forest at no charge on several of the roads close to the camp which have level, shaded, scenic sites. We have camped in both locations and fully enjoyed the trails both north, east and south of our camp. The elevation is 9990 and plenty cool in the summer. The 4th of July is crowded and there are 4 wheelers on the trails, but that is the only time you’ll see a lot of people there. You’ll find plenty of wood for fires. Also, big lake for fishing and a lot of streams.
We scanned the Carson Nat’l Forest map so we’d have something small to carry with us along with a GPS, and Google maps. We ride on trails and forest logging roads for miles.
We’re going back again this year and plan on riding from Tres Piedras to Hopewell Lake and all the places in between. I enjoyed riding this area compared to other places like Bonita Lake, Jack’s Creek and Valle Vidal. This part of the Carson Nat’l Forest has endless miles of trails and high rolling terrain (no steep mountain sides). Also the road getting to Hopewell Lake is much better than Valle Vidal or the step roads north of Pecos.
