I was up to the Horse Flats Camp, Still very knarly road into the campground, but it is open to camp. The corrals were in fair shape, and only one needed to be oiled until it could be opened. The surrounding forest is still pretty much gone as far as large trees. BUT, the campground here and the Bandido group camp were untouched. The Scrub oak and Ceanothus are coming back nicely after a long wet season and late snow. Trails were open down to Chilao Campground and people water could be had there. ( we filled a 25 gallon barrel and took back for stock) I recommmend arriving early on Friday if camping on weekends, as the horse sites are usually taken by reg campers, and they CAN BE rather noisy and litter a lot. Remember to either take your manure out of camp at least 50 yards and scatter so accumulation is not noticed. Or put in trailer and take back.

the big "Station Fire" came thru this area 1 month ago. much has been burned and some trails are closed as of this date due to rock sliding and downed timbers. while road is open, the campground is in disarray and you WILL have trouble getting water at Chilao as it is rationed to non-chilao users at this time. too bad this area got singed as it was a great place to just ride and relax. still is very step in places but challenges are fun too!
