We just returned from a 9 day stay in Shawnee - for half of our trip we stayed at Hayes Canyon - the campground was AMAZING - Ben and his family were so incredibly kind and helpful from getting us parked to ensuring we had everything we need including a farrier for a lost shoe! The permanent site residents were all so kind and welcoming - had great recommendations for rides and knew all the details of the trails what not to miss, what to avoid, level of difficulty for trails (we had kids with us). The shower house and laundry facilities were impeccable - we started using the shower house instead of trailers they were so nice and spacious! The sites provided great shade for us and our horses. the pens were great with rubber mats and manure removal daily by the staff. For easy access to watering your horse, bring a water splitter and a hose. The trails were great - trails to the west were very well marked - don't miss Jackson Hole. Indian Kitchen there were new trails being built so the markings were not as good but we made it! The catfish at the Shawnee Lodge was great too - with a great small town local atmosphere - hitching rails for the horses so you can ride there!! If you have kids, Ben's oldest daughter loves to play with younger campers so make sure to introduce yourself - she is the kindest little girl and loves to show off her tadpoles and bull frogs to the kids! |

Shawnee National Forest - High Knob Camp, near Equality, IL

We just arrived back from a 9 day trip to Shawnee - our first leg of the trip we stayed at High Knob. JoJo welcomed us with amazing southern charm - she was so kind, friendly and helpful - she runs a tight ship camp and has everything in order. She was incredibly helpful when our pony injured his eye, giving us some tid bits of suggestions from her history of being a vet tech - even had two different medicines on hand to help while we waited for the vet. She allowed us to use her personal trailer to bring our pony to the vet, as well the trailer to pick up some of our group when it was too hot to ride home. She had great suggestions on trails, set us up for water when we reached our destination at garden of the Gods. The shower and bathroom house was great - the stalls for the horses were amazing as well! She had us in sites at the front of the campground, where there was not much shade, but next time she said she will put us in the back - she said she likes to put the 1st timers in front to "keep an eye on us" which looking back we certainly needed her help!!! The locals were fun to chat with for free coffee in the office each morning, as well the permament campers. She had free freezies for the kids in the office as well!!! |

Broken Arrow Horse Camp and Campground, near Custer, SD

We spent 8 days at Broken Arrow - the sites were great - a bit crowded (not a lot of privacy), the stalls for the horses were AMAZING - but inconvenient as you had to haul your saddles up to the stalls to saddle (golf carts did help). Camp owners were incredibly kind and helpful. Trails out of camp were very poorly marked, so bring a GPS and get directions from the owners - we ended up trailering out most days to better marked trails - sites were beautiful!! |

End of the Trail Equine Campground, near Ontario, Wi

We stayed at the End of the Trail Campground over the fourth of the July. Campground was very very well maintained, Jan and her staff were so accommodating and extremely helpful - they provided rides in their big stock trailer to various drop points for the WildCat and Kickapoo trail systems - they were there whenever we needed them. The trails were great - all types of trails from wide, to narrow to rocky to sandy to pastures to forests to creek crossings, or river swimming. Great little bar to end at or stop for cocktails or lunch with great hitching posts. The shower house was great - was the old milking house/room - sites had electric, vault toilets were clean and super cute western décor. Office had fun souvenirs and a freezer full of schwan's ice cream treats!! Water conveniently located throughout the campgrounds in various locations, free firewood, high lines had nice horse shoes connected to it so you could evenly space your horses. Part of group stayed in the mobile home which was huge and very clean! The trails had fun views as well from look outs to rocks ..... |
