Typical of northern New Jersey, High Point State Park trails are hilly and footing is rocky; horse shoes recommended. Lusscroft Farms is part of High Point State Park which has 20 box stalls with 3 large secured paddocks and fencing around stall area. We have hosted 2 equestrian overnights a year since Jun 2005; the first weekend in June and also the 2nd weeknd in Sept (this ride is through the NJ QHA),any horse breed is welcomed. |

We have stayed at Flying W campground every year for the past few years. The primitive camping spots are up in the wooded, secluded areas and if you like privacy, this is for you. There are some permanent spots, but plenty of areas to choose a large spot to picket your horses in the shade. There are also electric/water spots in a crowded area near the arena.
There is no water in primitive, but you can fill up your tanks or jugs down at the barn at an outside spigot, near the showers. The showers are clean and you have to pay a few bucks, but they are separate stalls with their own curtains (no communal showering!) I believe there's a fee because some people have to make a mess for everyone else.
The trails ride right out of the campground, you can exit down the road to the river and access acres and acres of trails including rigorous mountainside riding and easier railbeds and fields. You see plenty of wildlife and people are extremely friendly. Trails exit from the campground are not for the beginner or at least, not for those who don't want to be challenged. There is a restaurant and gift store at the campground, and horses available for rent for guided trail rides. All in all, a great place to camp. |

Hickory Creek Wilderness Ranch, near Tidioute, PA

Hickory Creek is a nice family campground. You can get an electric/water hookup spot in the bowl, or a primitive spot out in the field or parked in the trees, there are LOTS of places to choose from. Some areas have a water buffalo, but you should come prepared with water tanks and picket lines. They aren't provided for you (as they shouldn't be). There is also a horse barn that you can rent a stall in.
Every year we go to the trail challenge, which is an all day ride with obstacles, challenges and a dinner afterwards. The staff is very friendly and helpful. If you need firewood, a tractor load of one (pine) will be delivered to you. You can get ice at the bunkhouse. The showers are four separate spacious bathroom/showers, which are very clean and private. You don't have to worry about communal showering.
Town is close if you need anything else, but don't blink or you'll miss it- my kind of town ;)
The trails tend to be quite easy, there can be some road traveling, but for the most part, the trails are well tended, with no overhanging branches or large obstacles. There are trails that lead directly into the state forest from the campground, where there are miles of trails.
Maps aren't really necessary, all you need to do is keep turning left, or right. If you go on a week or weekend that there is an event, you need to call in advance. They fill up quickly for a reason. |

we went to HCWC for our first horse camping experience. WOW. It was a great, big, huge campground with well maintained trails, and the weekend we were there, they had an obstacle event that my daughter rode in and had a blast in. THe service is excellent, clean bathrooms and showers. If you need firewood, someone brings you a tractor bucket load. I can't recommend it more highly. THere were so many nice people, there, all willing to smile and say hi, or give you a hand if you need one, setting up. |
