Trail Description: Chute Canyon is a narrow canyon that travels thru the San Rafael reef. You ride out and back thru chute canyon. or make a round trip loop by going out thru chute canyon, follow the back of the reef road back to the north and coming back thru the reef in Wild Horse Wash. follow Wild Horse Wash back to your starting point. The loop is an all day ride about 22 miles in length.
This is high desert and water is scarce. I usually ride this trail in the spring before the area gets it summer temps. Because of the narrow canyons, sunlight does not reach the bottom to melt ice or snow during the winter months and the trail can get very icy.
Chute canyon is wide enough that if vehicles were allowed a jeep of truck could drive up the canyon. Wild Horse Wash gets extremely narrow in short sections. In these areas there is no way for a horse to turn around and go back. I suggest you might want to dismount and walk thru the narrows making sure nothing has obstructed the canyon before asking your horse to proceed. Water is extremely limited. Make sure you horses drink well before you start the ride.
