Trail Description: Horse trails are a new concept at Chehaw. There is currently one marked horse trail, a loop about 2.5 miles long. The Park is currently in the process of moving the perimeter fencing to the Zoo. Once this happens, more horse trails and mileage will be added. This will open up about 10 miles of designated horse trail and should be ready for use by 2017. At the moment, horses are restricted to the single marked trail or existing firebreaks. There are separate bicycle and hiking trails throughout the Park. Horses are not allowed on the bike trails and bicycles are not allowed on the horse trails. There is a chance that you may see bicycles on adjacent trails. Most horses handle this pretty well but riders of particularly spooky horses should use caution. Most of the trail is old clay or sandy firebreaks. Some of these firebreaks are still in use and depending on the time of year can be soft. Footing is mostly good throughout the year, no rocks or hills. Cost is $5 per horse, per day.Year membership is $25 on top of Chehaw Membership.

The Horse Camping Area is separate from the cabins, tent, and RV campgrounds, although those areas can also be utilized. In this grassy area there are two electrical boxes that can each accommodate two trailers. Tents can also be set up in this area. There are three sturdy 12x12 outdoor corrals that are available for rent. Horses can be picketed in this area as well. Tying horses to trees is not permitted. There are water spigots and a hose next to the stalls and an outdoor hitch/washing area as well. Camping is $10 per horse (whether corralled, stalled, or picketed ), in addition to our normal camping rates. This $10 includes your $5 daily ride fee.
