Trail Description: Enjoy immediate access to 45 miles of well marked trails in the Hickory Ridge trail system. Just a short ride to the Charles C. Deam Wilderness area where there is another 35 miles of trails. There is TWO HOURS of riding on our special use permit trails where you DO NOT have to have a permit bridle tag. These trails will take you to some of the most beautiful scenery that Indiana has to offer. You can ride to lake Monroe for a swim, ride to Lost Cabin Pass for dinner (only on special events), ride to the Log Church on trail 10. We can get you a guide and set up a customized trail adventure just for YOU. (get with Kim about that). You will need to purchase Bridle Tags to ride in the Hoosier National Forest. You may buy them on site at the MTR Outpost Store. The forest is made up of diverse stands of hardwoods and pine forests that grace the hills and valleys of the Hoosier landscape. Trails are scenic and gently rolling; set up with switch backs on the steep parts.Trails are well marked and maps are easy to read; anyone can easily navigate them alone. YOU DO NOT NEED A GUIDE AND WE DO NOT REQUIRE ONE. However, they are available on some event weekends for new riders; experienced riders may just take a map and ride on your own. :)Spring is a great time to visit the forest, as it is painted with pink and white blossoms of redbud and dogwood. Wildflowers add to the dance of color throughout spring, summer and fall. Autumn colors are even more spectacular; reds, golds, russets and browns greet you at every turn. Oct 10th is about peak season in the Hoosier for the most color in the fall. That falls on our Fall Colors Ride; a 4-day special event ride that has optional meals, a band, a poker ride and other fun activities.
Midwest Trail Ride has 108 electric and water campsites, 13 cabins and 375 horse stalls. They are open every day from April to November for open camping and special event weekends. We have a large, clean, shower & rest room facility with a dinning hall/ rec room.
Office hours for reservations in summer are: Mon - Wed 9:00am - 5:00pm, Thurs 8 - 8, Friday 8 - 9, Sundays 8:00am - 3:00pm. MTR Outpost store hours are the same. Our tack store carries raingear, saddlebags, trail bridles, easy boots and many other things specialized to horse camping and trail riding.
We TRY to have a farrier available or "on call" for our customer's convenience.
The Rusty Spur Dining Hall is open for breakfast Friday, Saturdays and Sundays; 7:00 – 10:00 am.
There is a very wide creek that borders the campground for wading, splashing around on horseback and taking pictures. Nice and cool to sit in the shade of the creek when it is hot.
There are 10 shower stalls on each side (Men's and Women's) with modern flush toilets. Shower house is cleaned and bleached each week.
There are 13 cabins all of which have elec, A/C, heat, and beds with mattresses. Our cabins are sleeping quarters only, no running water. You will need to bring your own bedding (sleeping bags, pillows). See Lodging on our website for pictures and more info.
Stalls are 8X8 covered and water is only 20 feet away. Stalls are all right behind your campsites so you are always very close to your horse. See our website for pictures.
We have a large field with round pens for lunging horses and practicing the obstacle course. (Arena is planned for this area in the future.)
