Trail Description: Elkmont Rails to Trails is a GREAT place to do a day ride ! There are NO facilities. In fact, you park right in "downtown" Elkmont. Downtown Elkmont is DEFINATELY one of those "don't blink or you'll miss it" kind of places. And that's a literal statement. The trails have been recently upgraded and two bridges have been constructed to include an adorable COVERED BRIDGE ! This is a VERY pleasant ride. LOTS of trees to shade you in the summer. There are LOTS of folks who ride here so it's busy on the weekends. Weekdays you have a LOT less problem parking. You park basically in the middle of the trails. If you go south, the trail goes for 3 1/2 miles one way. If you go north, the trail goes for over 4 miles one way up to the Tennessee border. This is a former Civil War Railroad Track that used to supply a Confederate Fort not far from the track. In fact, on the south trail there is a sign that you can read. It tells a lot about the history. It gets sobering when you read the last sentence that states "200 soldiers died where you are now standing" (or in my case sitting on my horse). This is a very flat, easy trail. It's a GREAT place to start out young horses, condition trained horses or ride during hunting season when you can't ride anywhere else. Everyone is friendly and it's kept quite clean. There are a couple of restaurants nearby. One is within walking distance of the parking area and the other is a nice little Bar-B-Q restaurant a short drive to the west. This is a GREAT trail !
