Trail Description |
There are three areas in which to ride in the 22,000 acre preserve. Each has a little different flavor. The trail head and camp east of I-95 and north of the C-54 Canal is named "Story Telling". It is two track through varied vegetation including pine forest and grassland. It is all two track on solid footing. i.e. there is very little loose sand. The other camp is called "Ranch Camp." There is a 9.5 mile loop out of this trail head. |
Best Time to Visit |
During the cooler months as there is quite a bit of unshaded riding. |
Times to Avoid |
I would call ahead especially during the rainy season. It was dry in Feb 2003 but several areas look like they might be wet in the summer. |
Campground |
There are small corrals with small sheet metal covered areas for horses to get out of the sun and rain. Call ahead for information about camping. |

Directions |
There are two campgrounds/trail heads; Story Telling and Ranch Camp. To get to both camps, take the Fellsmere/Sebastian road (512) exit off I-95. To reach the south entrance (Ranch Camp), go east between one and two miles on 512. To reach the area north of the canal and east of I-95(Story Telling), take 512 west to Fellsmere, turn right (north) on to 507 and go about 3 to 4 miles to the North Entrance. Take the Buffer Preserve Drive east under I-95 (about 3 miles). The horseman's area is just past I-95. Don't park in the first field but continue about 100 yards to a gate on the left that is marked for horse parking. |
